all the newer versions of JTR use almost 100% of your memory..you could get an older version but you will seriously compromise your speed..the default file is in my opinion..very good..don't want a huge list as your default..Wickerman's lists in the wordlist files are notoriously excellent..since they are made from REAL passfiles..copy all these and most others and make a single list from them..i use raptor3 for this..your best list will come from your jtr.pot..use pothead.exe to make a single from your pot..you can find both proggy's here in the forum..good luck;]

Also if ur using winxp, you can alter the amount of cpu usage it uses by going into Windows task manager and right clicking on the john.exe in the proccess tab and select "set priority" and choose LOW or whatever is needed

Hope this helps

Cheers

actually, when you try to use JTR, you cann't do anything, probablly just go out for a walk
for getting the newest wordlist, the best way is to access the xxx sites' server, get the
SQL memebrs' name and passwords, but it is really difficult
so may be you need to use tools to collect and make your own wordlist
make sure always update your wordlist so that you can always crack password efficiently

Perhaps here:

or

here:

I am trying my hand at -17 now but had signinficant (at least I thought) success using these with -16 on older logs, but I never used other features modes or options at that time so cannot comment its usefuleness there....

I'm almost postive there is nothing you can do about the resource usage of John the Ripper
------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want really good wordlist for JTR you need to:
1. download all the combos here
2. use raptor to seperate each of them into two single lists, and save each
3. use raptor to then reverse each new single (password to drowssap) and save a s a seperate file keeping the orginal also
4. then combine all, and remove duplicates with raptor

You'll get the best wordlists this way, FROM REAL @ WORKING HITS!

ALSO, you can then use i think "staph" to make themed wordlists and another good idea is to modify a wordlist to fit specific targets pass info (number of characters)
